September 9, 2005

Today, I spoke with my cousin, one of New Orleans' finest police officers. After hearing her stories and getting her opinions, I am again not certain that I can go back to New Orleans.

Evacuees and displaced citizens are being treated like kings and queens everywhere but in Louisiana. Discrimination and racial profiling are worse than ever. Ask my uncle's friend, whose phone hotel reservations were suddenly revoked when she checked in with the clerk, who realized she was black. I am not sure I want to keep living in Louisiana. And as we all know, New Orleans is nothing like the rest of Louisiana.

If I have my way, by this time next week I'll be in New York.

Oh yeah, it's September 9. Happy Birthday to Me - I'm official 30 years old today.

God Bless You.

Comments:
happy birthday...allthough I do know you only from this blog ;-)

finger crossed for your collection. I don't think the looters are interested in stuff like that...

Just from Germany

To the birthday girl,
The blatant discrimination that exists throughout this country becomes unveiled during times of crisis and tragedy.
I left and moved up north. The racism exists here too, only here they arrogantly claim it doesn't - while the culprits live a geographically and economically racist existance.
I hope that in spite of it all and all of the bullshit and stressors that you, my friend may be going through, can find love and spirituality on this special day.

Love,
Your sister in spirit and birthday, jill (who is apparently much older than you today)
